Masterpiece. Instant classic. Gut punch. What to say about this incredible book? Miller doesn't just draw back the curtain on women's need for constant vigilance and gender violence, she burns it. Her story, searing, honest, and fierce, blazes with pain, light, healing, and tenacity. I have never been spoken to so clearly, touched so deeply, and I've certainly never sobbed so hard with grief. This is a lament and a rocky path out of darkness. Miller's writing is clear, gorgeous, expressive, and incredibly well-crafted. Really a life-changing book.

This was such a powerful, revolutionary memoir, and listening to it read by Chanel was so moving. I am hopeful that society is moving in a direction where victims do not have to go nearly as far as Chanel did to receive appropriate justice. I am also hopeful that these acts of violence can continue to be intercepted by community and looking out for each other. Believe victims, and believe women.

Wow. This was a difficult read. It was so beautifully written, but so difficult to digest. Chanel Miller writes with poetry that is at stark odds with the horrors she describes in her memoir. There were many moments I had to step away from this story, because the subject matter is so difficult to digest, but it was well worth the read. Chanel Miller offers hope, beauty, solidarity, and justice in a world that is still so cold and uncaring towards survivors.

Read the audiobook, narrated by the author.

A difficult, but worthwhile, read.

“You took away my worth, my privacy, my energy, my time, my safety, my intimacy, my confidence, my own voice, until today.”

I remember following the case as I was beginning college. I remember being devastated at the news of the sentencing. I remember being at Stanford graduation (on Chanel’s birthday, as I’ve now learned) and seeing the hundreds of protesting students holding signs in support of a girl we did not know the name of yet but whose story we have unfortunately heard too many times to count.

I’ve walked Stanford’s campus a hundred times. I think it can sometimes feel easier to try to forget how pervasive violence can be, but Chanel’s words have found their way into my heart. "To girls everywhere, I am with you." Sometimes, the same life that brings you light also brings darkness. And sometimes that feels like a neverending cycle, and you never know what side of things you're going to end up. You don’t always get to choose your topic, but we all have a story to tell.
