There’s a plot twist.

I can’t decide how to rate this book.

Originally I was going to give it a pretty low rating. I’m not a fan of the insta-love trope, and this book leaned into that way more than I expected. Also the relationship between the two main characters made me a little uncomfortable more than once and a skipped through a few parts (the insta-love really did not help here).

I will say, however, that the last hundred or so pages partially redeemed the book for me. The plot twist was so unexpected, and I was sucked in once I got to the sixth November (iykyk). I won’t spoil the book, so I will just say that I found the ending really gripping and thought-provoking.

Overall, I am still trying to decide how I feel about this book. I do think, though, that Colleen Hoover books just might not be my thing :)

Ah CoHo, I hate to do this and give an unpopular opinion… But unfortunately I was not a fan of this one.

If you’re into Instalove—two characters falling in love at first sight, all consuming love straight out of the gate—then you’ll be immediately pulled in. I guess I found out with November 9 that I don’t really care for that genre of romance. Ben and Fallon’s instant attraction didn’t seem believable to me.

The main thing that pulled my rating down was not something that went away throughout the story as it was literally the character of Ben, the MMC. From the beginning he gave me the ick by the way he talked and interacted with Fallon, without even knowing her. He was too confident and domineering and controlling for my taste, disguised as the “nice guy” who saw past Fallon’s imperfections. DUDE YOU’VE SPENT ONLY A FEW HOURS WITH HER. Idk, the simp behavior jumped out.

The plot had potential and I liked the sections being split up by the same date each year. However, that further drove the nail in the coffin that was my effort to give Ben and Fallon time to grow on me. Instead, with each year passing, I found their “connection” more and more forced and weirdly obsessive.

Hoover’s writing wasn’t bad, she always has great pacing in her novels, in fact. For me, the main relationship in this book just really put me off and the rest of the elements that I liked didn’t make up for it.

The whole premise of this book is just purely dumb. I gained no additional insight after reading this book and it didn’t affect me on any way. Why one day in November? There were just so many coincidences and the whole book just felt too predictable. Not to mention the lack of diversity in all CoHo books. Also can I mention they’ve literally made blue know each other for like 3 days. I literally hated the characters in this book they were toxic and did not treat the main character the way she deserved e specially the dad and
how she was redeemed in the main character’s eyes at the end of the story. What he did was not okay and the way he treated his daughter made me sick. By the end the daughter glosses over all his mistakes and ok being around him all the time. The reason was explained in just one sentence and wasn’t given much thought.
Lastly, CoHo’s writing was decent and felt quite readable and quick to read.

I just… I may give her one more chance but I don’t think this author is for me.
How can you forgive someone who caused your body to suffer and burn literally when you were sixteen? How can you allow him to act controlling and manipulative when he says I’m paying for this date, so you are going to wear what I want you to wear. Like does that not sound demeaning as hell?!
