However unlikely the scenario, it’s not entirely implausible that Mim carried out this epic trek over a Labor Day weekend. I mean, we’ve heard of runaways taking on cross-country excursions for lesser reasons, e.g. joy rides. Still, the sheer number of encounters that should have stopped her cold make this a little fantastical. But what a ride! In so many expressions of the word, too. I wish we’d seen more of certain characters and less of others, but then, that seems to be real life experience as well. It was definitely a quality escape from current reading material.

Cried so much at the end. Heartfelt and emotional and driving. Very unique character voice that I really enjoyed. One of those books you devour in 2-3 days.

I enjoyed some of this book, and would have rated it three stars based solely on the quirky characters and found family vibes, but I has serious problems with this book, starting with how awful Mim is (I get that she’s young and troubled but all the body shaming and “I’m not like other girls” got to me). I love an unreliable asshole narrator, but this didn’t do it for me. My main issue, though -potential spoilers below….

“I’m too old for you…for now.”

Gross. She’s 16 and he’s like 21? Made me hope she imagined him

i always come back to this book for comfort. mim was such a dedicated character and no matter her flaws, its hard not to like her.
i think my favorite part was the exploration into her relationship with her mom and step-mom. the whole book it was believed that her step-mom was a bad person, and in a way she may have been, but she cared for mim. she wanted to love and protect her from everything, and the fact that shes the one that came to get mim in the end is what really got me. also the fact that mim told her about her eye, the thing she had never told to anyone before.
and the plot twist made me want to throw up btw.
