I personally would give this closer to 2 stars, but I don't like historical fiction so some of that is just preference. I thought the plot, what I could make of it anyway, was okay and the romance wasn't bad. I have a hard time when they use old words that I don't understand or lots of titles like Lord, Lady, Marquess, etc because they also use first and last names and then I don't know which character is which. They call the main male character Lisburne, because he is the Marquess of Lisburne, but his name is Simon Fairfax so that was confusing. I liked the Leonie was smart and quick witted and gave Simon a run for his money. There was a side plot about a baby that I didn't understand at all, but it was an okay listen.

Loretta Chase, you are perfection.
I loved this penultimate book in the Dressmaker series. Leonie was a fun heroine and SImon was a perfect dandy with a heart of gold. I felt an opportunity was missed to make Leonie a little more math-obsessed, a little more socially awkward, but in the end I loved that she was a french coquette.
Can't wait for Clara's book!

Didn't super love either protagonist, and I normally dislike conflicts that pit the heroine's capability against the hero's presumed knowledge of her capability, no matter how flirty. However, when the hero's actions directly lead to the harm of the heroine's business and reputation, he *gets* it and grovels appropriately. Part of the conflict has been that he doesn't understand what her business and reputation mean to her, and it would be easy to have him feel bad for upsetting her but still not get it, but he does. He might not atone/grovel as much as I would prefer, but his thunderclap realization of just how badly she has been hurt, how his actions led to that, and *why* she was hurt was rather satisfying.

I think I made it maybe a third of the way through this? I wanted some fun and entertaining fluff and I quite enjoyed Leonie's character for a while. Lord whatisface was ridiculously boring though and I had no interest in the actual romance portion of the book...

I could’ve done without a repeat of the “she couldn’t possibly be a virgen” nonsense. I’d have been fine with the same thought - it makes sense for the privileged class and time to think such things - but surely they could’ve handled it differently. I’m also not super stoked with the way he took advantage of her the first time.

That said, I adored her. She’s definitely my favourite of the three sisters. The “business” meeting at the end was also beautifully done.

I’m just sad we never got to meet the valet.

Best Loretta Chase novel I've read in ages, and that's saying something because she's _always_ good. I loved this book, the characters, the fabric porn, all of it. Every time I think of the line "I was busy!" it makes me smile.

Chase fans will love it, others new to her writing should check it out.
