This was excellent!  A coming of age novel with some mystery.  The title could have multiple meanings, which I enjoy.  Time will tell, but Poppy seems like a character that will stick with me.

We are not our parents. That is what This Golden State teaches its readers. Poppy is torn between her family and her future, and it’s shown in a hundred small, but brilliant ways. Over the course of the book, Poppy learns to forge her own path. She becomes an entity separate from her parents. Meanwhile, her parents realize they cannot continue to stop Poppy from growing because of their mistakes. They let her go, to be herself and discover her purpose.

While the descriptions were atrocious, and the dialogue was slightly too cheesy at times, this book is still a great one. Poppy’s emotional journey of self-discovery is relatable and inspiring, even if the circumstances are not. Harrison’s character growth is also inspiring. He learns to not be afraid of his father, and how, even though we love our parents, we have to be our own person, and forge our own path through life.

I will forever recommend this book.

This book needs an epilogue but it is otherwise an enjoyable read.
