One of the best books about respectful and loving ways to communicate with children (and adults!).

This approach may have been revolutionary back when it was first published in 1980, but there are newer, better parenting books that encompass this information with more modern applications. I listened to the 2014 published audiobook and it was still pretty dated. Plus, the last 2.5 hours was just praises for the book from its audience over the years.
(Also, it’s hard not to eye-roll when the child/parent exchanges go so perfectly in their sample dialogue.)

I was surprised how useful I found this book. I read this from the perspective of an educator.  I listened as an audio book on the way to and from work.  Each day, I entered with a few ideas to try, and the way home I would reflect on how I could have handled situations better.  I could see this being a great addition for a parent to go through a bit at a time every evening, reflecting on the day.   I listened to the audiobook which worked well, but they did reference comics in the book which made me wonder the differences.  I liked that it read through the reflective questions, but a physical copy might force a reader to slow down and reflect more.

What I liked most about this book is that it gave examples.  Often, help books feel like they give generic advice with no real help for applications.  Here, they gave countless good and bad examples that really showed these strategies in action.

Ive used some of these strategies with my 14 year old students, and honestly I've had the most peaceful week in a decade of teaching!

I need to move from a Kindle to an actual book - the comics in it are hard to see on the device.
