MEH. The writing was not great and everything was fairly predictable. The author's a bit heavy handed with the foreshadowing-yes, we get that there is something special about the main character-but nothing made me want to read the rest of this series. I'd much rather just google to see if the internet can provide the answers.

Kate Daniels, magic sword-welding mercenary, has her loner existence up-ended when her mentor is murdered. Enter a plethora of allies, pseudo-allies, and dangerous enemies -- all of a paranormal persuasion. Kate is a compelling heroine, a mash-up of courage, smarts, foolishness, and nobility. The book is face paced and the magic-laden landscape beautifully detailed without overburdening the reader with info dumps. My only real problem with the book is her relationship with the shift-alpha, Curran. I'm not a fan of the enemies to lovers trope and that is definitely the substance of the romance subplot.

All of the rich descriptions of the magical creatures were great, and the unconventional approach to the magic system was in itself one of the mysteries of the book that kept me captivated. I’m looking forward to learning more about the interplay of magic and tech storms in future books. There are a ton of obscure creatures pulled from folklore and myth which I always enjoy. I found the characters to be a bit one-dimensional and unchanging (docked half a star for this), but the dialogue was well-written and witty and did make me care about them. I also enjoyed the misdirection involved in the narrative, the author does a really good job building a multi-layered “reveal” without confusing the reader.

Ok, so this I found out about because of Felicia Day doing a friday follow thingie on twitter... and... well... it was good! I positively devoured this book in like... three sittings. It was fun, had interesting ideas, had a character I could halfway respect maybe, had some suspense, etc. etc. etc. Also known as fun! Of course my love of it might have been a reaction to the doldrums that was my previous read, but still! I think it was genuine enjoyment. :) (2009 review)

The main character is strong and sassy, which is my favorite type. It was a quick, easy read and was really entertaining.
