Top end of the 3-star-spectrum.

Loved this book. You must evaluate the characters on their exterior selves, and what they say and do, for rarely will Mr Hardy give you insight into the workings of their minds, but for their actions. Such a good collection of people and animals and stars. I miss them already.

“Love is a possible strength in an actual weakness.”

A farm, many rejected marriage proposals, and many more sheep!

Wit and humor, but ultimately it felt like two books instead of one. The Hardy writing the end doesn't feel like the same Hardy writing the beginning. (I know very little about his personal life, but this seems a likely explanation.)

This book was slooooow. So many detailed descriptions of a church, or a hedge, or a sheep. This made it a little difficult to get through (though listening on audiobook helped, so I could pay little attention if I needed to).

Despite this, I do love Thomas Hardy's writing, he writes so beautifully that I can't help but get swept up in it sometimes. I also found this novel to be an interesting exploration of all the ways in which men may try to take advantage of and manipulate unmarried women. So much of what happens to Bathsheda, and how men treat her is relatable to a 21st century woman.

Another thing I enjoyed was the plotline. Having read Tess of the D'Ubervilles, I was pleasantly surprised to get a happy ending! It felt great to go through so much with these characters, and have it all wrapped up so neatly in the end (at least for our protagonists... perhaps not so much for everyone else).
