Saw the movie, and so had to go read the book. I'd never read any Hardy, and this was a fantastic surprise. Enjoyable, dramatic story, and the writing cleverly and perfectly articulates what it means to say:
"boots emphatically large, affording to each foot a roomy apartment.."
"He wished she knew his impressions; but he would as soon have thought of carrying an odour in a net as of attempting to convey the intangibilities of his feeling in the coarse meshes of language."
"misfortune is a fine opiate to personal terror"
"..stables, which are to a farm what a fireplace is to a room.."
"..though it was possible to form guesses concerning his wild capabilities from old floodmarks faintly visible, he had never been seen at the high tides which caused them."
The plot reminds me a bit of Emma, with Oak as her Mr. Knightly, though Bathsheba's matchmaking experiments are on herself, rather than hapless friends, and taken to more extreme measures, with more dire consequences. There were a few sections that got a little too rambley, and honestly, how could she have chosen that slime-ball Troy...! but otherwise we wouldn't have such a story, adversity and challenge to overcome to get to a happy ending!

This is a delightful story that is far superior to the most recent film version. The characters are honorable and charming, and you really want everyone to be happy here.

What a crazy ride. I have to admit I wasn't super excited to read it, but since my hold came up, I did and I ended up enjoying it more than I expected. I also loved the song references--I learned an Irish dance set dance to Jockey to the Fair as a teenager and I've always loved Lead Kindly Light.
19 Must Reads for 2019
12th December 2018
I put this on my 'must reads of 2018' shelf. That's not gonna happen. I have been meaning to read this ever since the film came out. Just looked it up, that was almost 4 years ago. It's the one book I brought with me from the UK in the hopes that it would force me into reading it finally. That hasn't worked thus far but here's hoping adding it to this list will work? I just want to watch the movie to be honest but after almost 3 years of owning the DVD, I can't get myself to watch it without reading it first. And I love Carey Mulligan. Why do I do this to myself?
