Dieses Buch hab ich mir für meinen Osterurlaub in Italien ausgeliehen, weil ich trotz meiner Ferien an meinem Exposé für meine Masterarbeit schreiben musste und daneben auf gar keinen Fall Lust auf eine zu ernste Lektüre hatte. Sowohl das Cover als auch der Titel und der Klappentext versprachen mir Klamauk, viele Lacher und einen satirischen Ausflug in eines meiner Lieblingsfilmgenres. Hab ich nichts dagegen einzuwenden - immerhin war es während meiner Schulzeit, als noch nicht feststand, ob ich Autorin oder Astrophysikerin werden will, eines meiner Lieblingshobbys, mich über die fehlerhafte Physik in verschiedenen Science-Fiction-Filmen lustig zu machen. Am liebsten gemeinsam mit meinem Vater, mit dem ich eh bald wieder mal einen Filmeabend machen muss.
Und dieser Roman beginnt sehr vielversprechend: Clint und Derek begegnen während einer Wanderung zwei kleinen Mädchen, die unbeaufsichtigt durch den Wald spazieren. Dass mit diesen zwei etwas nicht stimmt, wird ihnen klar, als sich eines der Mädchen auf Derek stürzt und ihn verschlingt. Clint ist aber Physiker, deswegen darf er am Leben bleiben und wird von den Aliens entführt. Gemeinsam mit anderen Wissenschaftlern soll er verschiedene Berechnungen anstellen - doch allen der Anwesenden ist klar, dass sie ihr "Do Not Eat"-T-Shirt und damit auch ihre scheinbare Sicherheit an Board verlieren werden, sobald die Berechnungen abgeschlossen sind. Also müssen sie kämpfen.
Den Beginn der Geschichte fand ich stark. Viele Stellen brachten mich zum Schmunzeln, zum Beispiel wenn die Aliens eine Sondenuntersuchung durchführen, da sie Clints "Erwartungen an eine Alienentführung" nicht enttäuschen möchten. Doch kurz danach endete meiner Meinung nach bereits die humoristische Umsetzung. Der Rest des Buches war für mich nicht irgendwie besonders lustig oder unterhaltsam. Nicht lustiger als ein ganz normaler, nicht satirisch gemeinter Sci-Fi-Film. Irgendwann ist der einzige Unterschied die Menge der Kleidung, die die Hauptfiguren tragen, denn außer der Nacktheit der Figuren und der Form des Raumschiffs, die dem männlichen Geschlechtsorgan auffallend zu ähneln scheint, kann ich irgendwann einfach nichts mehr erkennen, das eventuell humoristisch gemeint sein könnte. Das fand ich vor allem deswegen schade, da ich eben ein Buch mit viel Witz und Humor erwartet hätte - vor allem mit Humor, der über Penisse und Nacktheit hinausgeht. Ich wollte lachen und vielleicht sogar während dem Lachen zum Nachdenken gebracht werden, während ich mir gemütlich den ersten Sonnenbrand des Jahres hole, nicht eine ganz normale Sci-Fi-Story mit viel zu viel Gewalt lesen, wie ich sie schon zur Genüge kenne.
Mein Fazit? Leider gar nicht das, was ich erwartet habe. Schade, denn der Beginn des Romans war sehr stark.

This was a fun book, a solid 4. Entertaining and engaging, only a few slow spots the the beginning. Good characters and a great story. Loved it.
And damn if we can't give narrators a rating. I'm bumping this up to a 5, because of the bloopers at the end. How FUNNY and awesome. Loved it! Luke Daniels is a GREAT narrator (top 6 for me) and I'd listen to him read just about anything. Made the book, and the bloopers. :D

This book really surprised me! I didn't care for the first 1/3 of the book (I thought the humor was a bit to cliche and juvenile) but the book really started to pick up and all the action was well paced. Clint and the other characters were annoying at first byr by the end they had grown on me. I expected I wouldn't care too much for this book, but after finishing it I want to read a sequel or another scifi novel from Kevin Hearne.

In full disclosure, I am a massive Kevin Hearne fan, so I went into this expecting that, while it wouldn't be my favorite thing he has ever written, I knew that it would at least be entertaining.
This wasn't wrong.
To my knowledge, Kevin Hearne hasn't published anything truly within the sci-fi genre so far, so I wasn't sure what to expect out of this little novella. I wasn't remotely disappointed, either. This story is told from the point of view of Clint, who had to watch his best friend get eaten right in front of him and was in turn abducted by those same aliens. He is taken to their mothership and told that he has uses for them, but is not necessarily clear on what those uses are. It becomes clear rather quickly, though (and I'll avoid discussing that in fear of spoilers).
I traditionally don't love novellas that don't include characters from a series or book that I already love, because I feel as though I don't have any attachment to it. I will say that Kevin Hearne managed to get me attached to several characters in the space of 144 pages, and no one is more surprised than I am at this. While I did find myself at the end and wanting MORE of the story still, I found myself pleasantly surprised at the conclusion. Kevin Hearne, true to form, took a sci-fi (that occasionally swerves into body horror a couple of times, in my opinion) and made me laugh out loud multiple times.
His writing style is so easy to digest, and it was such a quick, fun, and exciting read. I read it in one sitting and couldn't put it down, because I had to know how it was going to end. While I still want MORE, this definitely gets a recommendation from me to anyone who enjoys a fun and quick, slightly satirical, sci-fi read!
