I bought this book because I've listened to Dan Carlin's "Blueprint for Armageddon" and "Supernova in the East," both of which I thoroughly enjoyed. For someone who is not all that well-read in history, this was an interesting insight into humanity's continuous hubris-imposed self-destruction. However, I found the footnotes incredibly tedious--I felt like I was constantly switching my attention between the body of the text and the footnotes. Perhaps this book is easier to digest in audiobook form.

As a big fan of Hardcore History, it’s always a pleasure to hear Dan’s voice and narrative. It felt much like listening to one of his podcasts though - and not a bad one - but as a book it lacked a more clear focus or storyline.

3.5 stars! Overall I really enjoyed this history. Dan Carlin writes in a way that is very accessible without dumbing down the material for all readers. The audiobook reads very conversationally. This is a very interesting and thought provoking book. Only complaint is I wish it was a bit longer.
