Video review to follow at end of this week

Felt like I should have liked this more and just didn't. It had interesting insights, real talk, and poetical structure, but I just couldn't get into it. The mentality didn't match up enough with my own, and I found it hard to learn to like the protagonist through the short bits of prose.

Had such a nice little time with this book. Admittedly I picked this up after reading Weather and I did like that one more, I think Offill mastered this weird and endearing style with Weather? They are very similar, even similar beats, but different feeling and heart. And tbh I'd read ten more books like this. Offill's books are just really engaging and enjoyable to sit in, even when they're dealing with hard and uncomfortable topics. This one was softer than Weather though. Anyway, all in all, Offill is an instant read for me at this point.

I’m very torn about liking this book. It provides an interesting stream of consciousness look at a marriage in trouble. It abruptly jumps around but it’s very similar to how my mind exists which was both comforting and annoying. Despite the internal monologue, i also felt pretty detached from the main character. And while it makes for a less pleasant read, i thought this was done really well. For much of it, it felt like she was detached from everything going on, trying to hold it together, numbing to get through it. Very quick read, which was the right length for this book.

I had been anticipating really enjoying this book based on reviews, but I was disappointed. I think overall the story could have been interesting about falling in and out of love, but the author switched back and forth between voices paragraph to paragraph, so I could never gain momentum. She switched from first to second to third person. And most annoyingly used "the wife" in the third person. Maybe to put space between the "hard" topics. I don't really know, but I didn't like it.
