I need to stop reading books where the main character is slightly insane and definitely mentally ill. The writing in this one was like a fever dream. In fact, that’s a good way to describe the whole novel. There were moments where I was in love with the writing. I loved how it incorporated snippets and quotes from other writers, scientists and philosophers. I think it was the characters that failed this book for me. Obviously, to show the wife as only a wife was a conscious choice on the author’s part, but that plus the dream-like writing style, made me feel very seperate from the characters and the going-ons of the novel. It was hard to connect with the story and, although there were parts where I empathised, for the most part, I just didn’t really care. I had to stop myself from skim reading sections which is never a good sign. I am curious to read more of this author’s work though since for the most part, I did like the prose.

This book was not my favorite. It was cute at times, and relatable at others. It was just very scattered and disorganized. Not my style.

This book has been on my to-read list for years, so imagine my surprise when I realized that I have it marked “Read” and gave it a 5-star review - in 2015.

It seems oddly appropriate that I read this blur in the sleepless haze my first year of motherhood and that I’m reading it again a decade later.

It’s still excellent.
