Karin Slaughter's intertwined story of the two daughters, Charlotte 'Charlie' and Samantha 'Sam' -- their lives after experiencing family tragedy and navigating family relationships (not only with each other but their father, and spousal relationships as well) is so engaging because it does feel real.
The feelings one would experience post these tragedies is real -- the fallout one had, unspoken and seen alike -- are also told in very real POVs, it makes for hooking the reader the first several chapters.

Transparently once the story switched POV to the second daughter, I skimmed past her telling of the tragedy. While it was a tad abbreviated from the first daughter's share, so not as long as a read - it didn't add much to the storyline except the additional POV.

Chapters upon chapters I poured through before I came across reviews on social media for a book group I am in - and there were the usual 'she lives up to her name because this is gory' (which I have said in previous Slaughter novels is necessary and doesn't feel like overkill, it puts the reader in that character's state of mind with the graphic gore-y details) -- but before thumbing past the post, I saw the mention of the story being too long.
I see how it can feel this way once a major moment happens, you think the story is complete and it continues on-- so I often take those comments with a grain of salt.

This book did have a bit of drawn-out fatigue towards the end. Almost as if it was, weave in a few more plot twists then provide a brief ending so the reader isn't left feeling like we didn't tie the story up - but not the kind where it's left you wondering did the author have a page # quota from the publisher (I have certainly felt those before).

Wow. Wow. Wow. This shit was sick and twisted and had me hooked from the beginning. My first Karin Slaughter book after being on my tbr forever and definitely won’t be my list. “There is value in forgiveness”
