I actually finished this book over two months ago but I couldn't write a review about it until later. I love this book, loved it so much- and I didn't want to ruin it by giving a lazy review about it. Now, thinking back, I would definitely read it again. It's a story that stands out strongly with the characters struggles and the rich world building. I mean this world is RICH- in narrative and culture but it all seamlessly fits together in the plot. Yes at times the plot did dip- I wish Maniye would not be running so often- but the author illustrated these independent characters and there story threw this wonderful world. And Maniye journey ended with her finding resolution with herself, her world, and her family. It wasn't a fairytale ending: it was brutal and magical, and I was moved by this book. I stayed up late many a night, caught up with the story and forgetting that I had to work the next day. It pulls you in, and you don't want to let go.

I will reread it. And I don't reread many books. And I still feel like I didn't explain why this book was so wonderful to me. It is now one of my favorite books- one that will go up on my shelf of unforgettable.

Wonderful book. Almost gave it 5* but just suffers a little at the end from leaving enough story threads open for the next book.

An engaging coming-of-age adventure story set in a world of human-animal ribes

Tchaikovsky's world in The Tiger and the Wolf is not an idyllic medieval place associated with classic fantasy. Primarily filled with tribal peoples with pre-Iron Age technologies in a hard environment, it is a fresh-feeling backdrop for an adventurous tale that kept me glued to the book. The plot benefits from its familiar concept of a young person struggling for freedom and individual identity, but the author avoids played out tropes. The fantasy enriches a narrative that is not dependant on it—the actual dragon is a relatively minor character.

More welcoming than anything else, the story is intelligently told, its plot unfolding with excellent timing and well orchestrated pacing. I cared for the characters and was always eager to continue reading.

I enjoyed the book it was right up my street and enjoyed it but not sure if I enjoyed it enough to continue the trilogy.  Maybe some day but I enjoyed Maniye's journey, though there were times I struggled to keep reading.  Slow paced novel but enjoyable nonetheless.

Story overall was pretty good, a bit of a long slog through almost repeating scenes and situations but the characters were interesting and diverse and well fleshed out.

4.25 or so...hell of a book with a killer ending.

Unique setting, great characters, compelling plot, and great prose. Tchaikovsky is an author to read.
