3.5 stars. This book was slow going at the beginning. And cold. Everything about this book was cold. It takes place in the winter and all everyone does is run around in the snow. Brr. And there's lots of running, chasing, fleeing, etc. The second half of the book goes much quicker than the first. The action definitely picks up. Much more standing and fighting rather than running. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

For a high fantasy book, it certainly read like a high fantasy book. While I immensely enjoyed the world-building and the different characters I found within I couldn't help but feel as if had Tchaikovsky pushed himself just a bit more it would have been a great book. When reading, I always felt that there was something just beyond my reach that prevented me from having a clearer understanding of how this world and its peoples work. This, in turn, left me feeling unsatisfied but not in the way of wishing to immediately continue the series.

I loved the word building in this novel. It reads like an entirely unique, interesting world.

That being said, I had a couple of times where I had a hard time keeping up with some cultural things that were going on. Maybe it was the naming structure, I'm not sure, but definitely felt a little confused here or there.

I did enjoy the crescendo to the end and will be reading the #2 book in the series.

One long chase scene with battles. Somehow curiously un-engaging, I wanted to like this but I was mostly bored.

I started this book yesterday morning while waiting in line for an oil change. Tchaikovsky's skillful world-building had my attention by the 4th page. With that start, I was stuck for the next couple afternoons finishing it. There was a lot going on that I enjoyed. Though the main character often did not have a set goal that she needed to see accomplished, it did not hinder her from driving the plot forward. I had a few premonitions about Broken Axe, left intentionally in some very subtle foreshadowing.

The world, races, and characters are wonderfully crafted, and I cannot wait to jump into that world again.
