Excellent story that takes place in the pre-Civil War slavery plantation south. I knew this was going to be a great book in the first 90 seconds. The story meanders a bit, but that’s because this is a fiction that is based on real life individuals. The main white young lady goes on to be a nationally renowned abolitionist against slavery, and an advocate for equality of women as well. After the end of the book, the author fills in some details on the true life story, but I’d say save that until the end, because she reveals a few points that are best saved until you’ve completed the book.

When I started reading "the invention of wings" I expected something totally different, but now it was the exact right book for me. Especially finding out how many people from this book really existed inspired and thrilled me. I had never heard of the Grimké-sisters and their doing before - as many great women who's stories get left out of our history classes - and I'm still absolutely stunned!!!
A must-read for so many (white) people who can't imagine the cruel reality of slavery.

!!!But also huge trigger warnings: this book deals with topics as slavery, rassism, sexism, torture and even execution!

I wasn’t sure about this book when I started off because I really don’t love having any more enslaved tales and I really don’t love a white person telling an enslaved tale from the perspective of an enslaved person but this is very well done. It really helps me that all of these people were real people and then the story itself is the only fictional part. It was exciting. I couldn’t put it down. It was also heavy. But I think it accomplished what it meant too. If you’re interested in history before the Civil War then might be interested in this book. they definitely did the research.

Based on lots of historical fact about the Grimké sisters originally of Charleston, SC, born into the land and slave-owning class of the plantation south. Both became abolitionists and feminists. While I do suspect it’s possible Monk Kidd overestimates how in favor of racial equality the sisters were (uncommon at the time even [sometimes especially] within abolitionist circles), it seems most of her characterization of them and their lives is rooted in reality. I find it interesting (and… unbelievable) that Monk Kidd has Sarah Grimké actively helping slaves at certain portions of the novel and find the ending unlikely to be historically accurate (white saviorism perhaps), but in all it was a decent read centered in significant research.
