I was wondering when the story would begin, but it never really did. The ending left me feeling like it was all for naught (although it was a fast read, just one evening). There were two stories within, hinted at and left untold. I did learn a lot about this kind of circus act and the lifestyle though. The protagonist’s neglect of her person, her family, and the task that she’d taken on were present throughout.

Dusapin engaged me from the outset, as I followed the main character down the rabbit hole to the Vladivostok Circus.

Behind the safety curtain, the dynamics of the performers are well-drawn and the protagonist's loneliness and outsider status is a thoughtful counterpoint against the tension that builds towards the big show.

Having built this tension towards this big show, Dusapin redirects the final passages towards something else entirely, leaving me a little let down and also unable connect with the ultimate pay-off.
