The characters and the central tensions are interesting. I think I would have enjoyed this more if I read it at a different time (not in a bit of a slump).

Chosen for A Savidge Prompt 24 ; to read from a prize list you have never read before.
This book was on the shortlist of the Walter Scott Prize for fiction 23

In Sept 1883, in a small town in the Australian desert, a six year old boy goes missing in a sand storm.
Over the space of a week we follow the entire community as they get caught up in the search. Where they confront their relationships with each other and the land that they inhabit.
We listen to many alternating points of view from farmers, indigenous trackers, children, artists, mothers to name a few and how they respond to this crisis.

A quiet, intense, story where the place is as important as the characters.
Shall definitely be reading more books by this author.

The landscape felt like an additional character. I was immediately invested in Denny. I loved the characters in this book however I would have preferred fewer with more description and background. Beautiful concise descriptions that evoked sense of person, place and time.
