Turns out neither officers nor spies interest me very much. Would have loved to find out more about four-fingered Margaride’s journey of becoming a horizontale.

A page turner but perhaps not the most suitable history to turn into fiction.

Fascinating historical fiction. Slow at times, but the last third of the book was of the can't-put-down variety.

I always enjoy when an author can write fact as fiction. I know some liberties were taken with side stories, but those are called out... and the reality is that it opened my eyes to an event I (embarrassingly) had no clue about prior to the book. Since it's presented in an interesting way it keeps me motivated to make sure I understand the true facts of the case.

A well-written novelization of the Dreyfus affair, from the point of view of Georges Picquart, who worked in the French counter-intelligence department, and discovered that Dreyfus' conviction as a spy was a cover-up for spying by others in the Army.

Fascinating story about a bit of history I knew nothing about.

3.5 Stars. As far as historic thrillers go, this was a very solid entry. The writing is crisp and the timeline and historic placement with references to an era in transition, was really interesting to me. I found the spy novel within a historic fiction aspect interesting and really enjoyed the dialog.
