2.5 to 4 stars. The story was intriguing enough to keep me interested and the writing itself was great. BUT...the non-linear timeline and the overall vagueness of so many key points of the story were a little too much. I don’t mind when writers leave some details up to the reader to infer, but there were too many left open for me to fully enjoy the story. A little mystery is good, but as the reader, I don’t want to have to write the story myself.

My goodness that was depressing. It read like a memoir. Why would anyone write this as fiction. Yicky

Wow I have surprised myself with this one. I contemplated stopping many many times. Just couldn't get on with it. The past and present setting usually works for me, but it felt so confusing with this one? The past stories of them/her as children was fascinating to read, but as soon as we got into the present I was bored, nothing ever happened really. Maybe I'll re-read it again in the future to proof myself wrong.

Heart-wrenchingly difficult read. That doesn't mean you shouldn't read it, absolutely you should, just be prepared for some difficult imagery that is almost impossible to get out of your head.
I had to keep reminding myself that it wasn't a true story.

There is a pressure to the book that keeps on building. You know what is going to happen, so it's not a shock, just a feeling of immense sadness
