Another enjoyable chapter in Septimus' story! Sage never ceases to delight! I got a little worried when I was 85% through, but she wrapped it up neatly and it was fun, but I would expect nothing less! Onto book 5!

Not one of my favorites. Well written and a good author but the second book was just too dry for my liking. Magyk was probably better than these and I liked it better but I will continue this series for the sake of not wanting to leave this series unfinished.

This is why I love this series! Such a fun and wild ride from start to finish! I loved how intricate and detailed the plot gets and how everything comes full circle by the end. I’m very much looking forward to the next book and dare I say, Simon’s redemption arc.

Another enjoyable book in this entertaining series! I did want a little more information and "meat" on this story. Things were pretty slow to get rolling, and I always feel like the characters are more passive in the narrative than I would like.

That being said, the story itself is really interesting. It builds more of the world and characters of the Septimus Heap series, and that made this a really fun read. Beetle and Septimus are great characters, and truly I love them and all of Sage's characters, but in this book, Jenna really bugged me. She's been mildly annoying in previous books, but traits that everyone seemed to love her for were really just annoying flaws IMO. Silas and Sarah Heap also need to retire, they don't add anything to the narrative.

The villain Tertius was great, and I'm hoping for more details in the next book, but I'm not super hopeful. There's just SO MUCH MORE I need to know! It drove me crazy!

I recommend to fans of the series, I wouldn't recommend this as a first read in the series, as it picks pretty close to where the last book left off, and a lot of context from that read is needed for certain details to make sense. This is long but an easy read for younger readers looking to get into longer chapter books. It's a breezy 500+ page read!

What an adventure! Stunned yet again by the additional side character stories.
