Bridges that go nowhere and everywhere?
Fantastical vampire ish storyline and inscapes? Nope. Not my kind of read.
Not for me.
Then tell me why I could barely put it down? Why did I like it so ?

I wasn't really sure what to expect from the premise of "Creepy old man saves kids and takes them to Christmasland" but this book was insanely good.

I had only read The Fireman and Locke and Key before and while they have dark elements, nah dude, this book is dark. Yet never depressing, just dark themes. Oh, I haven't mentioned yet, the book is not just about the creepy old man scooping up kids like a mangled child-catcher. It is also about Vic, a kid who realises that she can travel across a bridge that only seems to exist in her mind, to find things that are lost.

This book really is excellent, Joe borrows liberally from classic tropes and scenes yet always makes them original. The cliche "page turner" couldn't be more apt, yes i also found myself covering up the bottom of some pages so my eyes didn't flick down and spoil the narrative for me.

As a brief footnote, I am not one of those people who can perfectly visualise everything they read, I always have a vague sense of what it looks like but cannot "see" it. Here was different, I followed Vic everywhere, picturing it all, thanks to Hill's accessible style.

This was a really good book. If you like dark and twisty and can handle some difficult subject matter, I recommend to you.

This book was massively disappointing, which is a shame as having read some of Hill's other stuff I was looking forwards to this.

While the prose here is smooth and flows easily from beat to beat, virtually every idea here feel like I've read it somewhere else, which leaves the whole experience feeling kind of hollow and frankly like a bit of a waste of time.

This isn't helped by the fact most of those ideas seem to have come from Steven King books

Was listening to the audio book and there ended up being too much corny male writing for me. There was a lot of fat shaming and just weird vibes from it and it just got tiring and I didn't continue

The (Amazing!) Book Club of Doom selection for August, 2014. I'll write more about it when we've had our discussion.

It's quite a page-turner!

Fun story: I bought this book because of both the high ratings and though it would be about chemical warfare or biological diseases. Boy was I wrong!

Then I thought to myself, "this writing style is soooo similar to Stephen King's, but back when he wasn't making all the dad jokes and corny references". I looked the author up and lo and behold it was his son!

I enjoyed this book, but I am a very stingy giver of stars. Don't let my 3.5 stars fool you. It was written well, with great imagery and you could feel the characters' pain as if it were your own.
