I love Ashley Herring Blake a lot. This book is one that I found myself relating to a lot more than I thought I would, with Charlie’s struggles with her gender, and Mara feeling distanced from her mother after a traumatic event. The way it was portrayed was just so right, I felt like I completely understood what the characters were doing and their motivations for it. I love that Blake isn’t scared to acknowledge how life is living in the South, especially when it comes to topics such as rape. How all of the characters can’t bring themselves to say the word, and when Mara is the first one to do it she’s scolded as if she had just dropped an f-bomb in front of her parents. All and all, this is a must-read for any high schooler.

A heavy read that addresses the topic of sexual assault with incredible nuance and tact. An important read - honestly it felt like Speak but for a new generation. I greatly enjoyed and would recommend.
