Wild Houses / Colin Barrett

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~ “Look at what you’ve done up to now,” he said, his blue eyes looking up at her, boring into her. “All of this is in me. I know that. But I wouldn’t ask you if I didn’t think you could do it. ~

I don’t know why but I liked this, the story, the pace, everything just clicked.

Busiest weekend of the year in Ballina, and Dev answers his door to his cousins The Ferdias with Doll English in tow. Doll is Cillian’s brother. Cillian is small time seemingly sharing the Ferdias of money. What follows is the story of Dev and how he is handling this and his backstory. Nicky, Doll’s girlfriend, and her search to find him. What you are willing to do.

At the crux of it, it’s the story of a weekend, and a look into human nature and mental health. A story in our pasts and how they reflect us as people going forward.

The Ferdias would want a talking to.

How you can fix what doesn’t want to be fixed? As is said in the book ‘You like it easy, don’t you?’

With endorsements from Sally Rooney and Brandon Taylor on the cover, I really expected more. Classically Irish in its faint existentialism and rural backdrop. Ultimately, i think I just wanted more of Nicky and perhaps less of Dev.
