Uncle Andy's: A Faabbbulous Visit With Andy Warhol by James Warhola

This book assumes a pre-existing awareness of Andy Warhol, his personality, and his accomplishments, but it doesn't convey much about him himself except that he was eccentric, abstracted, wore a wig, and thought everything was art. (Maybe that's all you need to know about Andy Warhol.) The prose starts out with an adult reflecting on his childhood, but ends with a child talking about his present as if it is currently happening — the chronology of the book seems inverted, which leaves the conclusion feeling unbalanced.

Subtitled "A faabbbulous visit" with Andy Warhol by his nephew, James Warhola. James' father never warns his brother, the famous artist Andy Warhol, when they're going to visit him and James's grandmother. A memoir and enjoyable look at a famous man through his young nephew's eyes. James went on to become an illustrator and artist in his own right. This is his first book as both author and illustrator.

I loved this book and its sequel Uncle Andy's Cats. These books rarely circulate at the LRC I work at and I don't know why - you don't even need to know who Andy Warhol was to appreciate this story about a young rural boy visting his uncle and grandmother in NYC with his large and lively family. Uncle Andy and his brother Paul (the boy's father) couldn't be more different from one another except in their ability to take junk and create art from it.
