I have a confession to make. If you want to ban me from Goodreads I'll understand, because this is shocking: I have never been able to make it through Catch-22. I've tried several times, and never made it past the first hundred or so pages. There's no need to get into details here, and I only bring it up because MASH, for me, does what Catch-22 purports to do.
MASH is actually laugh out loud funny, and there aren't many books that can make me do that. Chris Moore and Carl Hiaasen have that ability, but that's about it.
The hardest thing about reading the book is not picturing Alan Alda as Hawkeye. The original Hawkeye was nothing like the maudlin character Alda made. Having said that, there are several scenes from the book that ended up in the TV series eventually: the Brits serving wounded tea. And Hawkeye's soliloquy about the people of MASH and their time together showed up towards the end of the series.
If you think the series became an overwrought farce, read the book. It will remind you of what it should have been. If you like the series, go ahead and read the book. You'll recognize much of it, and probably enjoy it.

The parallels between the show, book and movie make me very happy. To read the original part of this group was very interesting. My Grandpa and I watch this show together every summer so I was already predisposed to like this book. It took me about three hours to read. Finest kind.
