I had a few issues with this book but there was also a lot to love about it. The Paper Palace and surrounds are so richly described I feel like it’s a place I can escape to in my mind.
I’m not articulate enough to explain my issues with the male themes in this book - but gosh there was a lot of bad men around. It almost felt excessive the amount of abuse/potential for abuse. That is what lost the one star for me. Oh, and the ‘co-incidence’ when two people of the characters ran into each other in a cafe in New York. Please.
I’m not sure I was 100% sold on the depth of the relationship she had with Jonas, that it could rival what she had with Peter. But some great themes about what it means to be a woman and a mother.
I will I’ll be thinking about this book for a while and the themes of the paths you take in life, and the decisions you make and where they can take you…

DNF.
Synopsis promised a great family drama - but I couldn’t get past the crude language of the first few pages. Pretty sad actually - could have been a winner but it’s a DNF for me.

DNF. Made it to page 105 before I couldn’t take any more. Not a single character was likeable and all behaved badly. Glancing at goodreads reviews of what was to come, I’m glad I stopped when I did.
SO SO GOOD.
TW: rape, violence, sex
This novel has SO MANY LAYERS. And yes it's worth the capital letters.
Beautiful descriptions of The Paper Palace that anyone who has spent time at a cottage or in the woods or at camp will resonate with.
Just go read it. It's worth it. It will make you feel all of the things.

Such an interesting novel. The characterisation is so rich and varied, the characters themselves so precisely drawn and distinctive, I was deeply enmeshed in them and in their complex and often terrifying stories. Yet all with a shining veneer of normalcy - as though one simply bucked up and carried on no matter what.
Very good.
