WOW this book was really fun and entertaining. some bits were maddening, some hilarious, some romantic, and others sad. there was a sense of poetic irony and exaggeration that gives this story the feel of a folktale. the ending was a bit wild, but after letting it simmer (haha) in my mind i’ve come to like it. (this a very food-oriented book, so pls keep that in mind if that is a sensitive topic for you)

I liked the fairy tale style and the way the recipes were woven into the narrative. Unfortunately, the narrative itself wasn't very good. The main character falls in love with a man with zero good qualities and lusts after him for years because they're forbidden to marry. He treats both her and his wife so badly and they're both so into him. There are two interesting characters and they're both hardly in the book.

An old favourite (especially the first several chapters)! I would really love to edit out the outdated racial language and fatphobic remarks to make this book hold up long term.
