Jan Brett's illustrations are so beautiful and complicated.
The illustrations are soooo beautiful and they really help make the story come to life.
The story is cute, but I picked this book up for Toby because of the artwork. I love Jan Brett's art. She is an amazing illustrator. The details in her pictures are just incredible. Rock on, Jan Brett. Rock. On.
Reading a Jan Brett novel is like being wrapped in a warm blanket on a cold night in front of a fire with cocoa in hand. Tonight both kids were interested in the book. Who can resist looking at those panels on the side and all the details of the book. The hands and faces of the people are incredible.
Both kids gave the book 5 stars. It was a great story they said.
The story is a Ukrainian folk tale and in the intro Jan talks about the stork nest on the roof is a sign of good luck. This is about a white mitten that is lost in the snow and the animals in the forest. It is humorous.

The story is a bit slow, as old tales usually are, but the illustrations are just perfect. A quicker paced story would have rushed us by all the beautiful art. The last illustration was a nice touch.
Jan Brett is known for full page illustrations especially attention to detail and texture, along with the cultural additive. The Mitten is a charming book, about a lost mitten in the woods and the woodland creature that attempt to call it their home. What is so unique about this book, is that the reader can notice a story through the borders of the pages, as the mitten owner has not clue that his mitten is being stretched beyond its limits.
This book would make for a great prediction book, and its climactic story, allows for the students to guess and build the story as they go. A great teamwork book, I would love to use this in the winter season of my classroom, since the pages are full of white snow. This is not a favorite of mine, but definitely a book that would have value in the classroom. There are other Jan Brett books, that's are similar, that I would also want to have in my classroom collection.
