OMG. I had no idea this much goodness was in store for me when I started this book. I admit, I have Ledge sitting on my shelf staring at me, waiting to be read but I wanted this to be my first by McEwan and just WOW.
At 12 years old, Nina and Patrick meet as they're whisked away from the outskirt mining hometowns. They're brought to Belavere City to discover their magical potential, as all do on their 12th year. Without potential, they're shipping back to work as craftsmen. But with it? Their future is unlimited and they're declared artisans. The two discover the truth about this rite of passage and go on their very separate ways. In the years that follow, they're brought back together on the brink of war and views have changed. Neither has forgotten the other, but they each have their views. But only Nina faces an impossible choice.
Wow. Wow. Wow. I loved this. It took a minute to get into, but once I did I couldn't stop. I felt for both characters and can only imagine where book two will take us!!!

Well paced, strong characters, and leaves you excited for what comes next in the series. Nina is a great character with hidden agendas, skills that impress, and a heart full of conflict. Patrick is heartbreaking and lovable with loyalty in spades. Entertaining with some very funny dialogue that had me chuckling. It also made me evaluate the disparity between the wealthy and the working class.
