This is gonna sound crazy but I would read again - densely packed with information and well balanced/clear-eyed. Not a casual beach read.

part family story, part theory, part history, The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine by Rashid Khalidi was an incredible read. 

 

rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 

 

four things i now know to be true: 

 

1️⃣ from its very inception, israel has always been a white supremacist colonialist project. 
. 
2️⃣ israel has never been interested in palestinian statehood. 
. 
3️⃣ the genocide happening in gaza right now is not an anomaly. in fact, israel has been refining their tactics over time on palestinians and the middle east for decades. 
. 
4️⃣ the creation of the state of israel would not have succeeded without the direct support of Britain and the U.S.

. 

🍉 everyone should read this book at least once. ceasefire now. palestine will be free.

The information density of 'The Hundred Years war on Palestine' is immense. Chapters 1 and 2, especially, are critical reading for understanding how we got where we are today, 7 months past the October 7th 2024 Hamas attack on Israel. Despite re-listening multiple times over, chapters 3 and 4 include so many people and organizations and countries - and Khalidi jumps back and forth in time, and between reporting and familial anecdote - that it's a bit hard to track the main thread. I would have felt skeptical of chapters 5 and 6 had I not witnessed (through media) the past 7 months of seeming ceaseless slaughter by Israel on the people living in the Gaza strip.

Although no doubt slanted or worse, "Hundred Years" is important for being a fairly succinct presentation of the Palestinian perspective on history from partition to the near present. Given the frequency with which I've seen it on the reading lists of people in my social milieu, "Hundred Years" and books like it seem to be helping to turn public opinion and fuel pro-Palestine protests around the world. The author is in fact Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University, which staged one of the most vociferous pro-Palestine student protests in April 2024.

as if i needed more reasons to hate henry kissinger

this was an amazing read. part memoir, part theory, part history, this book was emotional, informative, and engaging. khalidi brings the reader through the last century of palestinian history with skill and intentionality, educating while also humanizing the historically dehumanized palestinian people. i would recommend this to anyone.

Rashid Khalidi is the descendant of many important political figures in Palestine, and he weaves a history of Israel’s control and occupation of Palestine since the Balfour Declaration a hundred years ago. I appreciate the historical overview inter-told with his family’s involvement in major events.
