Hauntingly beautiful. This really deserves any prize. This book will stay with me for a long time. I had to put it down sometimes to really soak it in and consider it's profound thoughts on addiction.
.A realistic portrayel of Thatcher Britain set in Glasgow and the consequences of de-industrailisation of working class communities including poverty, alcoholism and then the subsequence neglect of children. Nicola Sturgeon is quoted on the back saying and I completely agree. 'A searing, brutal and deeply moving account of poverty, addiction and childhood trama' it is her book of the year. I know it is a continuous term but it does show the development of the underclass in Britain brought about by Tory policies. Also it has themes around toxic masculinity again caused by in part by the closing of traditional working class industries in this case the closing of mining pits.

i am inconsolable. the way shuggie and agnes’ relationship was depicted was so tender yet so so heartbreaking. what a tragic story.
