A gardening book that will only appeal to the die hard garden book lover and even then (I say as a die hard garden book lover) it will probably merit only a so-so.
The book, unfortunately, suffers not only the ravages of time but the American reader's obvious difficulty reading a book written in Czech and translated into British English.
For the most part, Latin terms are used (although some of these plants have since be re-categorized and/or named) but there are a few head-scratchers. The overall garden observations are still tried-and-true and there are a few little smirks to be had, but overall it feels stale.
The illustrations by Josef Capek, however, are expressive and fun.

Věřím, že kdybych se zajímala o zahradničení, předala by mi toho kniha mnohem více. I tak mě ale Čapek potěšil svým jazykem a humorem.

If P.G. Woodehouse wrote on gardening, it would be a very similar work, I'd imagine. A very pleasant, short read!

Witty, delightful little read. Recommended for any gardener that could benefit from a bit of humor. Some knowledge of Czech culture enriches the experience but is certainly not a prerequisite.
