Definitely helped to see the movie first, I was getting lost in the dialogue and getting characters mixed up.

Not a book I would pick for myself, but it was alright.

A group of women, with limited knowledge of the world outside, with limited education, in two days trying to break down and understand the patriarchal society that has been created around them. These women for maybe the first time can plainly speak to what they have endured, on the backdrop of their religion and desire for pacifism.

An overrall amazing book, but at times it felt hard to follow and was disjointed based on the large group of characters and how the format of the book is written.

Highly recommend for everyone to read, but heed the content warnings.

This book was really difficult for me to get through. I am a person that needs shorter chapters and when I started this book I was immediately met with a chapter that my kindle app told me it would take 2 and a half hours for me to read. I like to read before bed but without a promise of a break, it’s hard for me to commit to actually starting to read.

On top of that, I’m really frustrated that a book titled “women talking” was still told through the lens of a man. I get the purpose of the man because they don’t know how to read or write but the more important purpose of the story is to shed a light on their experience and their turmoil over their choice. I feel like the book focuses on him way too much. He inserts himself in the narrative too much. The last chapter took it over the edge for me. I was over it. My unpopular opinion is that I wish I hadn’t wasted my time reading this book.

A powerful and emotional read. It’s definitely slow - don’t expect a lot of action but the defection the women are doing is very profound

A book that needs to be read and understood and loved. As a man, raised by women, I related to August. As a man who was put among boys, I understood August. But more importantly, in the era of bear or man, I understand why its the bear after finishing the novel.
