There's a bit of ending fatigue, and the idea Sophie's mysterious illness was an inevitability that would kill her if she stayed a human felt like a cop-out to transform her into a unicorn and keep her in Arden . I know it often makes the story richer to make the villain sympathetic, but, at this point, it feels there's an oversaturation of sympathetic-or-redeemed villains. It also brings up theredemption-equals-death trope, which makes the sympathetic realization near the end feel cheap.
I do like how how Mayor Nadiabeing made ruler of Arden had nothing to do with her royal blood and everything to do with her just leadership and valor. I like how she was simply made the first prime minister, and Arden was made a republic .
