The art in this book is really awesome, the plot is likable, but the thing I like most about this book is the princess and her responsibility not only to her people but also to the creatures of the kingdom who's king kidnapped her. They did a good job making her not the typical princess who will continue to rule afterward but bringing justice and democracy to the kingdoms. Excellent job just showing compassion to the "enemy" and just making them normal folks. If there happens to be another I will be sure to pick it up! ~Ashley

If you want another not your stereotypical princess books I highly suggest Dealing with Dragons

I LOVED this very dearly. Really cute and arresting art style, really fun and engaging story, with a bunch of tropes that you can't help but love, while still being very fresh and frank. I loved Misty as a protagonist, she's so fun and strong and determined and bullheaded. I love that she was determined to go her own way and be her own person, but she never got all 'I'm not like ~other~ girls' about it. Which I suppose shouldn't have to be a point of praise, it should be something we expect, but it was still a relief, especially in a fairy-tale-esque setting.

All the side characters were great (MAJOR SHOUT OUT TO ROBIN AND FOGMOTH, cutest bfs ever ;;) and everything tied together so neatly. And while it was a relatively short book and we didn't spend a lot of time in it, I grew to love the world! I LOVE monster people and monsterhood and seeing their interactions with humanity. And there were TWO cross species romances. And one of them was GAY. I feel so blessed.

Gosh this was just... a really simple but really really cute and fun story. So glad I read it!

4.5 stars.

Occasionally, you'll come across a sweet and short book that was nothing more than a good story. This was only kind of that book.

At first glance, Another Castle is one of those feel-good stories. It's loud and fun. The art is reminiscent of Princess Peach from the Mario franchise and the characters didn't have quite as much depth as one might have hoped. They had just enough for you to enjoy their presence, but not enough to form a complex character. Therefore, when there was a happy ending, it was satisfying but not truly meaningful. Yet there is still a moral to the story. It was just stated very plainly.

In that sense, it was quite like a children's book. The message is "gender stereotypes are bad". Wheeler demonstrates this by subverting the traditional roles of the heroic prince and damsel in distress princess. He also touches on racism by using the monsters as the outsiders or oppressed. None of this is done very subtly, but it is done well. It would be a good book for children (although it's a fun read for adults as well).

Read this if you like:
– princesses kicking ass and taking names
– princes who are a little useless, but sweet all the same
– monsters who might be terrifying on the outside, but are beautiful on the inside
– dragons and witches

Interesting premise, clunky execution. The end chapter felt especially rushed.

After spending a night thinking about it, I realized I was too harsh in my first review, so I gave it another star. This is a solid princess/monster/high fantasy story with some unusual solutions to common tropes. The main character is both a princess and a warrior, and her early disdain for being "just" a princess eventually gives way before new experiences in a kingdom that isn't as peaceful and stable as her father's kingdom. For young readers who think about the politics of kingdoms - and who doesn't - this book is a welcome exploration of various ideas.

And there's a low-key gay couple who are adorbs.

“If you don’t repeat the same mistakes, if you let people choose what they want to be, the future is a mystery. Some people think that’s scary. But it’s scarier if people don’t get to choose. The future is a landscape as well, and we can build whatever we like there. We don’t have to build another castle.”

Plot wise this book feels like more of a three than a four, but the illustrations and character are adorable and inclusive in a wonderful way. It just feels very rushed with little weight to the story. Cute though & with lots of good ideas.
