Love her, love the “recipes’ at the end of each chapter.

I know oversharing is  a problem for her, but it sure is refreshing and validating to hear her experience..

A fluff-free, amazingly honest and amusing tour through a difficult life of mental illness.

This is one of the better memoirs i've listened too. I think Maria is hilarious and I'd totally go to her show. Again the book ends a little abruptly but I think the formatting is fun. The chapters are divided up into separate "cults" and chunks of her life. I appreciate that she keeps the timeline pretty easy to follow and describes what's happening year wise as well. I think I would have appreciated more of a conclusion other than her own twelve step program creation. The PDF of pictures and all the recipes were such a cute addition! I'd definitely recommend this as a good starter memoir. Very easy to listen to and funny while being serious.

This memoir is distinct for the level and tone of its self-awareness, and, in my opinion, that's what made the whole thing work. I went with the audiobook version of this one, and I found that listening to her upbeat delivery as she chronicled incredibly difficult things enhanced the book. After all, she's a comedian and a voice actor-- her delivery is a central component of her work.

This was a difficult one to read.  I think if there is an audiobook version it might work better that way since it is written very much in the style that the author does comedy, so it can be very jarring with regular changes in font and abrupt asides.

Overall, it was interesting to read someone’s experience with mental health treatment, but it was made very obvious that it was from a privileged perspective.  Some of the advice given was offensive at best and dangerous at worst (joining a cult, while on brand for the book is not a good idea for the majority).
