A lot of tgis didn't resonante with me unfortunately. I'm not sure if it's due to not having grown up in England or not having had proper time to let the stories absorb - but this was a bit of a miss for me
Don't get me wrong, the writing isn't bad. It's easy to read and comprehend. A relatively quick read too. But I couldn't connect with most of the characters or relate to their experiences.
My favourite story from the lot would have to be Flying Kite. I liked Petal from Tinderloin too!

Tinderloin: after finishing this book, this is the main story i am still left thinking about. the icky age gap, the details of butchering and blood in general, and a girl and her love for a dog that is not her own? it was so fucking stellar and idk why but i pictured chappell roan as grace and i love that and i love petal
Overnight: “…her body as a nut cracked open” is the most gut-wrenching way to describe a r*pe my god
Snakebite: THIS WAS SO LONG BUT SO GOOD. another one where i caught myself thinking of the characters when i was away from the book. it was written so well and in such detail it was like watching a movie. i cannot believe someone could let another person blow up their life like that and that is another reason why love is so cripplingly terrifying. hope doug the rabbit is okay tho

The Mothers and the Girls: reading a story about people in the circus set in “present day” was so strange to me. like people still do that for work? yes of course logically i know that but,,, huh? also i kept picturing River to be matty healy and the image of the girls about to jump from the bars is so clear in my head wow

The Bread: i’m telling you the depiction of blood in these short stories is so chilling but so good damn. ALSO “i thought of a leather jacket i’d seen in a club a few years ago, with white letters sewn across the back: ‘i was atheist until i realised i am god.’” FUCK
Today’s Square: but the gut punch i was expecting to end with but a gut punch nonetheless, i love my mom and value the time we got to spend together because of covid
