I feel about the same about this volume as I did the first. The best thing about The Authority is just how different it feels from other superhero fare. At this point, it's still in its own universe with its own set of supporting characters and it also takes a lot of big swings with the crises the team has to face. In any other universe, the things they would be up against would be huge, crossover event comics based on how they regularly impact the entire planet. Unfortunately, there's still a lot of stuff in this that doesn't work. Despite trying not to be racist, (and actively stating that racists are abominable people) the depictions of characters who aren't white still show a lot of passive racism. The politics and commentary on the superhero genre, while well-intentioned, are cartoonishly heavy handed and don't seem capable of grappling with many of the issues that are picked up. I'm still glad I read it, but this is very much a text that is of its time, and it really shows at points. The only exception is Midnighter and Apollo. They were actually a very tasteful representation of a gay couple that feels strangely out of place next to the way this comic handles a lot of its other subject matter.

This is more like what superheroes would be like in the "real world." It's gritty and harsh and, in a way, believable.
