In Just My Type, we follow ex-high school sweethearts Lana and Seth as they are competitively pitted against one and the other in a highly coveted columnist spot that either could only dream of. For Lana, this means she must learn to love herself when she's single. while Seth must learn to become boyfriend material and settle down. I loved watching the two of them interact and slowly shift from enemies to lovers. I loved the growth that Lana went through, it felt really personal (coming from a similar point of view).

I'm a huge sucker for a second-chance romance, so this was a perfect and easy read for me. It's a binge-able book (even if we can spot the ending from a mile away) with loveable side characters (minus the boss). Overall the cast was well fleshed out, and I loved the group chat messages that broke up the chapters as we check-in and see who was in the lead for the "friendly" competition.

Although the plot seems unrealistic to real life, I could really see this being made into a rom-com movie. If I had to change one thing about the book, I would have liked it if we had gotten a dual-POV and heard from Seth and his emotions, and feelings.

Admittedly, I almost gave up on this early on because the female lead seemed too immature, as other reviewers have mentioned.  Once the story got going and other characters were introduced, it became more fun.  By the end, the female lead had definitely grown as a person in all that she had learned about herself.  Although the focus was mostly on her, the same could be said for the male lead,
so it lead to a right time-right person type of ending, over 12 years in the making.

Taylor Swift songs: “This love (TV)” and “Mary’s Song (Oh My My My)”

I think this a pretty cute Romcom! Two ex high school sweetheart journalists have to compete, and whoever’s articles get the most votes wins a column in the newspaper. This gives me “How to lose a guy in 10 days” vibes!! This was a fun, fairly easy and quick read.

If you don’t like pop culture references, be warned, there are so many in this book, she’s a huge marvel fan!!

Honestly, it did feel quite rushed to me though. The resolutions felt a little too easy/simple. I would’ve maybe liked them to be a bit more deep and not just fix it immediately and brush past it, as well as more character development and growth. But if you like lighter romcoms, you would probably enjoy this more.

It wasn’t my favorite, but it certainly wasn’t bad at all! Also, I’m just not a huge second-chance romance fan, and I really don’t like the miscommunication trope (which was there was a lot of in this book).

Age rating: 16+ (a few brief spicy scenes, 2/5🌶️)

Thank you Putnam for the finished copy in exchange for an honest review!

Just okay for me, but definitely check it out if you're a fan of People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry (longtime friends rediscovering/redeveloping their relationship after some mysterious misadventures/break in the past), Adult Assembly Required by Abbi Waxman (East Coast transplant in LA, dealing with past trauma/family issues), and The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon (relationship shenanigans for workplace advancement, rivals to lovers).

Just My Type by Falon Ballord was super easy for me to rate 5 stars! The slow burn was perfectly paced between former highschool sweethearts, Lana and Seth who are reunited when Seth takes a job at Lana’s workplace. I'm such a sucker for second-chance romances and from the hilarious (second) meet cute to the hilarious competition between the two of them to secure a position at the newspaper, this love story made me laugh and gave me all the swoony feels that made my heart sigh. Also, narrator Tegan Ashton Cohan did a wonderful job with portraying this story through her voice differentiations and flow.

Thank you @prhaudio for the complimentary audiobook. Thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
