The reputation of O's story as an erotic classic is both absolutely correct and deeply deceptive: it's not sexy per se; it's certainly not arousing. Rather, it's an unflinching, stylistically aloof, coldly elegant delineation of the erotics of power exchange. That O is not given much (any?) interiority clearly has a disquieting effect on many readers; frankly, I'm not sure how much someone not already familiar with the mental & emotional terrain of S&M dynamics—or at least not willing to inhabit the masochistic mindset as totally & completely as O does—would get out of this. Anyway, I certainly did.

Classic of the bdsm litterature; Sometimes it's a little bit too much but it's an excellent erotic novel!
This was actually a re-read, and it's a complicated one on any front. It was better than what I remembered from a writing perspective, and more complex. It's oddly not that explicit being more centred on O's reactions to the experiences, the world in which she is now a part of and the relationships she has in in. Definitely not for everyone and can ruffle a lot of feathers, but has a lot of psychological elements that range from thought provoking to disturbing.

In this day and age of copious and easily accessible smut (as you can see from some of my other reviews), this great piece of erotica from the last century comes as a breath of fresh air in a literary world inundated with land, same-y, beige blah.
The Story of O is sexy without being crass, sensual without being overwrought, and shares the beauty and the art of a submissive's training without being demeaning to the subject. Highly recommended.

I had expecte more explicit stuff and more spice. Was disappointed that it was mostly monologues and descriptions.
