This book is amazing. I’ve never read a play that starts with a manifesto written to align the director with the vision of the author. Most of the gold in this play isn’t even audience-facing, instead it’s hidden in the character notes for the actors.

We meet people who have the souls of salmon swimming upstream, or who are betrayed by a post-war world of broke men who refuse to laugh, or just want to play pinball. They’re all lost together in a dive bar with more charm than Cheers.

The preface is better than the play.
The play has many of its own gems though, if you look closely. It’s the preface playing out, but I think at the same time the play is really abstract and w/o much real structure. It has its deep moments and reflections you go “oh wow” at sometimes, but as a whole, often gets boring and pointless; also, everything that is said has already been said.
