This book reminded me of the Richard Peck books. I don't think it was written as a kid's book but I think it would be a good read aloud book. Probably for 10 years old and up.
Don't remember much about this one, either, but I do remember that I loved it because I could identify with the main character, Will. It was an interesting story of southern life, and infamous southern scandals. This book is in the same sort of category as Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil - except not as dark.

Cold Sassy Tree was required reading for me in high school, and I remember being completely thrown off by the Southern vernacular and being frustrated by not caring about the plot. I wondered why we couldn't read some classic like every other class; apparently, my class was supposed to like bestsellers.

Coming of age of a young boy in the south. One of my all-time favorite books. A great story and pleasant writing.
I read a review that labeled Will Tweedy as a mixture of Huck Finn and Holden Caulfield and I can't think of a better comparison. (I would add that I think this book also has a similar feel to that of [b:The Ladies Auxiliary|98718|The Ladies Auxiliary |Tova Mirvis|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1320436579s/98718.jpg|927860].)
Very charming story line, beautifully developed characters and outrageously funny dialogue. My favorite:
(Will Tweedy has just been caught kissing the mill girl, Lightfoot.)
"Just then God spoke out loud in the voice of Miss Alice Ann. 'Will Tweedy, you ought to be ashamed!' said God. I looked up and there He stood in a pink and white poky-dot dress, pointing His plump forefinger at us (pg. 246)."

Good story in the style of southern literature. Reminds me of Eudora Welty. Recommended book.

Meh, just couldn't get into it. Maybe some other time it will engage me more.
This was a selection for my local book club. It is a very slow paced story and one that I had to force myself to finish. It's one of those stories that just is about life in a small town. There isn't much of a plot, just family interactions and how events play off one another. Not particularly my cup of tea.
