I highly enjoyed this beautifully written classic piece of literature. I had been meaning to read it for several years as it is one of my Mom's favorites. The book did not disappoint! It is a fabulous, multifaceted story that is relatable and heartwarming.
The somewhat abrupt and heartwrenching ending almost kept me from rating this as 5 stars, but this book has captured me in a way I hadn't thought possible - not since my childhood, anyway! A nostalgic Southern look at the good ole' days, it is full of life stories about love, death, and growing up. I listened to this on CD - Tom Parker's reading is unmatched and worth experiencing, if you enjoy this novel.

If you ever wondered about the life of a small southern town this is the one to read. E. Rucker Blakeslee, Grandfather, is the main character and he is a character. He owns much of Cold Sassy including the local store. His 14 year old grandson, Will, is very much like him. Mr. Blakeslees wife dies at the first and he marries Love Simpson before the mourning time is over. Of course this is the first of many scandalous things that occur.
I read this by the pool in Mazatlan Mexico when I was a senior in high school. I couldn't put it down.
Southern fiction is usually not my thing, but I LOVE this book. Really just a charming, funny, delightful read.
Despite all the weighty happenings and judgement this story also feels light, almost as though you were living in Cold Sassy rather than turning pages anticipating the next bit of drama. I laughed, cried and caught myself talking a bit like Grandpa a couple times;)Looking forward to the sequal.
I don't remember this book being egregious or tiresome in any way. It was summer required reading, I liked it just fine, but topic-wise it didn't hold much interest for me. Teenage Chloe's interests had more to do with intently waiting on the last Harry Potter book and rereading [b: His Dark Materials|18116|His Dark Materials (His Dark Materials #1-3)|Philip Pullman|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1442329494s/18116.jpg|1943518], a new favorite book. Reading a story about the arrival of machinery in small cotton-producing Southern towns during rural, turn of the century America, therefore, didn't really scream engaging. A very solid, very neutral 3 stars.
