One of my favorite things about Blackest Night is that it’s both in-depth and approachable. If you picked up Blackest Night as your first event comic, you don’t need to know precisely everything that happened; as long as you know that superheroes have a habit of dying and coming back, and what a zombie is, you can understand passably well everything that happens.

With that in mind, I’m becoming increasingly convinced that Brightest Day is a mess. 12 main characters with their own unique missions, most of which are resolved in other titles? And the characters that are central to the main story are drawing on complicated mythos? (The Hawkgirl-Hawkman plot is particularly egregious about this, imo.) I have decently broad comics knowledge, even having been an irregular reader in the early 2010s, but I feel like this is really a struggle to read.

Not to mention, in addition to being complicated, it’s just not as good or compelling as Blackest Night. But what can you do? I’ll read volume 3 and hope I get more out of it.
