This wasn’t really what I thought it was. I was wanting a book about magic and the wizarding world, not about JK Rowling and creating Harry Potter.

It's like reading a museum. Some things were cool to look at it, but I found myself wishing there was more /substance/.

This is a great book for uber-fans, but overall the execution was not great.

An interesting volume that collects Harry Potter tidbits, art and excepts from removed or edited parts of the original books alongside a curated collection of items highlighting historical magic practices. Recommended for Harry Potter fans, but also fans of mythological creatures and historic artifacts.

One might be surprised to know that Jo Rowling (her name isn't "J.K." - hehe) did TONS of research whilst writing the Harry Potter series. This book, Harry Potter: A History of Magic is the complementary book to the British Library's Harry Potter exhibit. It covers each of the main subjects that are offered at Hogwarts and gives the real world inspiration. Even werewolves, giants, trolls, acromantulas, all the things!

One of my favorite things about listening to this book is the use of appropriate voices. Example: The brilliant Eddie Redmayne read bits of the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. How awesome is that?

Another cool bit is that the audiobook version isn't just someone reading from the pages. It is mostly hearing the people who were involved with the exhibition, lore experts, audiobook narrators (Jim Dale and Stephen Fry, artists), curators, etc. discuss how things fit into the Wizarding World and what Jo Rowling used as inspiration. That's pretty nifty for nonfiction. The only bummer is not having the visuals that the book-book has.

For lovers of lore and want to know every little thing about the potterverse. I absolutely ADORED reading this. I'm sad I can't actually go to the exhibit but this book makes me feel like I basically did anyway. Highly highly suggest.
