i want to preface this by saying that after a few chapters, i started reading this book as a parody rather than a non-parody book. it has all the things we love about superheroes and comics and saving the world but without all the seriousness that can come with the stories (“with great power comes great responsibility”). and it’s that way because it’s told entirely from the perspective of an outsider—just a normal everyday person who doesn’t have superpowers. it actually DOES make fun of comics (etc) several times. which is why i really enjoyed it. it’s fun, quick, and lighthearted for when you need a good pick me up.

does this mean it lacks depth in characters (for some, yes) and emotions (for some, yes)? but not all because they’re there, but they’re not the central part of the story like most superhero reads. because imo this book is purely for fun.

now as a non-parody book, it’s still interesting. it reads like a middle grade despite the character ages and can be predictable for the most part (i didn’t catch ALL the plot twists but i got most of them). there’s actually not a romance like i thought there’d be (unless simonds adds more books
