Man, nobody does romance like Emily Henry. Whenever I read books by other romance authors, I can see the standard romance novel plot structure in the pages, and it pulls me out of the story. But with Henry’s books, nothing is known or expected besides the happy ending. She always takes you along for the ride in ways that feel organic to the characters she has created, and this book is no exception!

I’m tired of romance tropes. Emily Henry doesn’t shy away from using them—she integrates them into her novels with a bit of a twist, and it always feels really authentic to the story. This book is no exception. Harriet and Wyn really earned their second-chance romance. The latter third of the book was full of powerful, adult conversations, both between the central couple and all their friends.

I slightly prefer Book Lovers just because I felt *so* seen by Nora, but this book is just as well-crafted!

This was so good!! I have been converted to an Emily Henry fan. This wasn’t explicitly a romance novel but a relationship novel. Everything felt so real and intricate. Emily Henry is so good at making her characters have real likes and quirks that they actively know about each other in a way that doesn’t feel overly forced. They just exist??? The friend group was so well done and no one felt annoying or caricatured. Their relationship struggles were so relatable and I cried multiple times. Such a great read.

half interesting conflicts and emotions, half platitudes and middling writing

firstly, I have to scream about this: seriously, the amount of medical jargon in the narration was so cringey 😭 it’s established she’s a doctor, now let it go.
My nerve endings light up in concentric circles that reverberate outward. Cellular fireworks. Neurological Ferris wheel spokes.
NONSENSE

the good part is how henry gives each character a distinct personality and you can feel their friendship bond, and also how she describes the happy places.

but this couple is better apart. 💀
her moving to montana for a guy and ditching a nice career
is horrible, no matter the situation. and I can’t believe a couple of 8 years and friend group of even longer communicates this badly without imploding sooner. but bc this is a romance, their wuv survives this. living HEA is nice, but the ending is rushed, and I was left believing in sunk cost fallacy more than their relationship.

As per usual, you can expect this Emily Henry novel to gut you emotionally. A second chance romance of two people who have grown apart in an eight year long relationship due to a myriad of reasons that the book reveals in the most gut wrenching yet cathartic way.

The book explores found family in a tender and reverential way, cherishing long years of companionship in proximity and distance, appreciating the growth and love and support that is provided by the people you choose to keep around you. It is twined in with Wyn and Harriet's relationship troubles as they try to protect the friendship and figure out whether distance or a second chance is what they need to prioritize.

Of course, in typical Emily Henry fashion, the story subverts traditional romance tropes and story structure in a refreshing and introspective way. You feel the pain, the joy, the love, the melancholy, and more.

Truly a stunning fourth book.
