I had forgotten how much I enjoy Kristin Hannah's books. This one had me feeling so many different emotions. I couldn't wait to see what was coming next.

I read this book in a hurry so you could say it was compelling but not the whole story. The relationship that develops between Julia and Alice is the best part of this story. The other parts were either too predictable, too unrealistic, or just bad writing.
Too predictable: the way the romances ended up
Too unrealistic: the small town vibe didn't really click for me, it's a small enough town to gather all the residents in one church, yet they don't see some people for weeks?
Plus the bombshell beauty queen who becomes the police chief yet seems to consider herself not that smart and is obsessed with finding love? I could not get a good picture of Ellie in my mind at all. What a weird character.
The conflict between Julia and Ellie that was hinted at, as well as the conflict of their parents, also seemed to not have as big of an impact as I thought it would.
Bad writing: the emphasis put on the weight gain or loss of the female characters was unnecessary.
But Alice herself was wonderful, and the development of her character was really well-done. Also seeing how Julia handled her and changed as she worked with Alice was also incredibly lovely. I'm happy with the way things turned out, but it was quite a journey to get there.
